Different Strokes From Different Folks

This week I wanted to share some of my favorite art from talented painters whose works are fresh, colorful and original. Not to mention can help to inspire some fabulous summer parties and adventures.

First up is the work of artist Rachel Ann Austin and her beautiful Map Paintings series. In a world where the GPS is king, I love her mixed media technique of layering paints and oils over reused maps. With each painting named after the location on the map used,  it’s enough to inspire a gal to grab some friends and hit the open road! Throwing a wedding in Napa? Attending a family reunion in Chicago? These would make for the perfect invite with cities specific to each event.

As a child I was obsessed (obsessed!) with ferris wheels. So when I came across this whimsical, colorful painting by Cathy Nichols I was instantly taken back to the childhood days at Coney Island riding the very ferris wheel depicted. Purchasing a bunch of red balloons and pretending to fly was also a totally non-negotiable part of the day.

For those starry summer nights I love Melissa Moss’s, “Isn’t it Beautiful.” Why yes. Yes it is. The little characters who inhabit her paintings are so darn cute and it reminds me of good times spent with friends and family.

I have a special place in my heart for surfing, which I have attempted several times and managed to remain standing for approximately 30 seconds. Impressive, no? While continuing on my path to long-boarding stardom this summer, I came across artist Spencer Reynolds who has created an amazing collection of ‘Surf Art.’ I absolutely love how his use of patterns and colors give the feeling of movement to the paintings themselves. Sending this design as an invitation for a beach party would definitely make me feel like the surfing champion I am not.
