Choose Your Blooms

Wedding floral arrangements by zodiac sign
From Tarot.com
Aside from deciding on the right location (and spouse!), picking out a floral arrangement is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make about your big day. In a sense, the world is your oyster as you choose the blooms that will set the tone for your ceremony and reception. Which blossoms best represent not only your personal taste, but also the bond you share with your significant other? Which flowers complement — or determine — your color scheme? The options are overwhelming, so let your Sun sign act as your personal florist!
Aries (March 21 to April 19)
Since the Warrior sign’s realm is spring, Aries brides and grooms will feel naturally drawn to flowers that bloom with intensity and bold color. Any flora they choose should be vibrant, since Aries is a Fire sign. Daffodils are a natural choice: not only are they proud and tall, they absolutely demand to be seen the second the snow melts! Like Aries, the daffodil demands its rightful, prominent place in the world. (Fun fact: in botanical circles, daffodils are called “Narcissus,” after the mythological Greek figure who became enamored of his own reflection. Since Aries is a very image-aware sign, this flower would set the perfect tone for a romantic Warrior wedding!)
Taurus (April 20 to May 20)
Ruled by the earthier side of Venus, the planet of love and beauty, a Bull bride or groom is known for having classically romantic tastes — but the forceful Taurus energy also suggests intense passion just below the surface. What flower is more traditional (and poetic) than the rose? With soft, pleasing petals and a scent that has been adored since ancient times, this blossom reminds us of powerful unions from throughout history — but with its sharp, self-protecting thorns, the rose also reminds us that love is only for the strong, like the steady Taurus who is about to stand at the altar!
Gemini (May 21 to June 20)
Always-on-the-move Air sign Gemini won’t have put months of planning into the wedding itself, so brides and grooms born under the sign of the Twins will favor wild flowers over anything that needs to be pre-ordered months in advance. In a nod to their dual nature, then, Geminis should be offered a few floral options: think peonies, with their double petals and fresh aroma — these complement a Gemini’s innate duality and innovative, youthful outlook. Also, suggest slightly offbeat Andromeda flowers that grow wild and free (much like Gemini), with a name that suggests a connection to the cosmos, which represents Gemini’s high-minded nature.
Cancer (June 21 to July 22)
As the sign that prizes history and tradition, Cancer wants a ceremony that will be truly memorable — so the floral arrangement better make an impression with the sense most connected to nostalgia: smell. Since the gardenia is one of the most poignantly fragrant blossoms out there — and gorgeous, to boot! — it would be right at home in a Cancer wedding. And because the gardenia continually repeats the blooming and closing process, even as it’s on display, it will specifically appeal to the Crab of the zodiac — Cancers are known for giving a lot of themselves to others, while also needing time to retreat into themselves. The exotic appeal of this flower will also remind Cancer of the ocean and its own element: Water.
Leo (July 23 to Aug. 22)
Leo brides and grooms are showy by nature, so they’ll want their organic dÈcor to draw attention and make an impression. The flamboyantly-colored ranunculus flower (also known as the Persian Buttercup) comes in flame-like hues that represent Leo’s Fire element, and is both glamorous and otherworldly — much like Leo! Otherwise, the Lion of the zodiac might want to go even bolder (and pay homage to its own ruling planet) by using sunflowers as wedding dÈcor. Truly, a sunflower arrangement would become the center of most guests’ attention at the reception, and this is truly the Leo style.
Virgo (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)
As the green thumb of the zodiac, Virgo is one of the most discerning when it comes to picking the perfect bloom for the nuptial ceremony. A hydrangea arrangement would look delicately striking from a distance, while up close, the flower’s delicacy and intricate design will inspire admirers to reflect on the complexity of nature — and this kind of analysis is oh-so-Virgo! A flower with strong aesthetic appeal and details worth examining show off Virgo’s discriminating tastes and connection to the Earth.
Libra (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)
The balance-seeking sign of the zodiac is all about beauty, so a Libra bride or groom will enjoy finding the exact blossoms to complement an already impeccable motif for this romantic day. While sentimental, Venus-ruled Libras might be tempted to make liberal use of a flower that holds special significance in their relationship (even if it’s a simple daisy or carnation), but ultimately a keen eye for style will win out. So an almost supernaturally gorgeous flower, like the elegant Calla lily, is an excellent choice. The svelte lines of this flower are so perfectly crafted, it’s as though they may have been drawn by one of Libra’s fave fashion designers!
Scorpio (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21)
Intense and deeply passionate, Scorpio brides and grooms like provocative styles and tend to have more edgy tastes. That’s why the Gloriosa lily is the ultimate accent for a Scorpio wedding. The crimson-colored tendrils of this oddly beautiful flower seem like something that burst from the underworld — the Scorpio realm! Beware: these beauties do pack a sting (much like the Scorpion’s poisonous tail), but used wisely at ceremonies where children will not be present, the Gloriosa superba can dominate any wedding setting with their alluring beauty.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21)
Sagittarius brides and grooms won’t even consider traditional roses or lilies — they’ll want something that reflects their passion for world travel. Inspired by tribal prints and lush, jungle locations, Sags want bright colors and vibrancy in their floral arrangements. The Parrot tulip fits the bill — not only is it multi-colored, it’s done its fair share of globetrotting, too! Believed to originate in Holland, Iran and Kazakhstan, this flower — much like Sagittarius — is a true citizen of the world, and like the Archer sign, it’s obvious that this flower has its own fascinating story to tell.
Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)
While Capricorn brides and grooms don’t want anything bright, showy or tacky, they do want “elegant” and “abundant” to rule at their weddings: a Capricorn bride wants to stride statuesquely down an aisle that is lined with precious flowers, like the pricey hellebores, a mesmerizing flower remarkable for its range of color and its beautiful form (it looks a little like the ultimate hybrid of a daisy and a rose). In fact, the hellebores is often called the “Christmas rose,” because it typically blooms during the winter time (which happens to be Capricorn’s season). It’s far from common and its evergreen leaves set off its cup-like blooms. The lush beauty of this flower — and its rarity — make it an ideal pick for one of the most discriminating signs of the zodiac.
Aquarius (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18)
Off-beat Aquarius brides and grooms want to have unique weddings that express their individuality, and this philosophy extends even to their choice of flower. So the starburst-like amaryllis is a natural choice — there are few flowers that can compare to its exuberant shape or signature color (generally, white with red, vein-like fibers). And like Aquarius, the amaryllis blooms at a different time than other flowers, setting it apart from the crowd.
Pisces (Feb. 19 to March 20)
For the dewy-eyed romantic of the zodiac, the luscious orchid is an ideal pick for dÈcor. This fragile flower packs a punch with its intense beauty — it seems like something out of a dream, or at least another reality, which is Pisces’ realm! Pisces brides and grooms will admire this unearthly beauty and the spell orchids seem to cast wherever they’re placed. And like the sign of the Fish, this graceful blossom is flexible and adaptable, a rare combination in one ethereal flower.
