Oscar®-Themed Party Food

OscarsCall me a nerd but I have seen every movie to win an Academy Award® for best picture. That’s right, all of them. A few years back a friend devised a plan to watch all previous winners by the time we graduated college. Never being one to forgo a challenge, especially one that involves sitting in front of the TV with Milk Duds and Swedish Fish, I can say that I have seen them all and surely have favorites, least favorites and an extreme appreciation for modern day special effects. Needless to say, I am always sure to watch the Oscars®. And adding extra flare to my watch party, is always a treat. While you can go the elaborate route of red carpets, champagne and home made ballots, I highly recommend serving movie-related foods tied to the Oscar®-nominated films. This year’s titles provide lots of fun options.

Of course the easiest route to take is anything blue! Try blue curacao drinks to start off the night or, if you want to whip out your inner pastry chef, check out this cute sweet treat.

Up in the Air
I suggest refraining from serving any ‘airplane-food inspired dishes’ at your party. Yes, this would be the most direct interpretation of the film but I suggest going the more chex-mix and mini appetizers route for everyone’s sake.

The Blind Side
What better dishes to represent the all-American true life sports tale than ol’ faithful: cheeseburgers and pre-game nachos.

District 9
According to the food-to-create-for-an-Oscar®-party blogosphere, the only option here is Prawn, which I agree is the most obvious choice but I think you could get away with a nice 9-layer dip too.

Inglourious Basterds
I mostly included this one just so I could have an excuse to make one of my all-time guilt pleasures, German chocolate cake.

Up
Lucky for the kid in all of us, this movie pairs well with fun dessert options. My favorites of which are upside-down cake and push-up pops.

So I know what I’ll be doing on March 7th, but how about you? Host your own Oscar® night party!
