Joe DeCamillis—artist, poet, writer—has created book inspired art since 2003. He studied creative writing at UCLA in the 1980's before discovering a gift for telling stories with paint & brush. As a painter of oil miniatures on copper, he found old books to be a perfect companion to further narrate and contain his exquisite illuminated images.
He continues to push creative bounds utilizing every part of deconstructed books. In 2010 he hand stitched the first ever quilt from cloth and vinyl covers of hardbacks choosing the travels & tales of Jack Kerouac as theme. It is the beginning of an ongoing series of Book-Cover Quilts. The book quilt also recently took Best of Show at Virginia Beach's Boardwalk Art Festival hosted by their Museum of Contemporary Art (which now claims one of Joe's book pieces as part of its permanent collection). Joe utilizes many other processes in his mixed-media constructions including gel-medium transfers, digital manipulation, found objects, poetry, fiction, collage, glazing, and watercolor.
His work has been exhibited in numerous solo gallery and museum shows, landed in many important private & corporate collections, and garnered over 70 awards at premier art fairs including 26 Best of Show and 20 Best of Media.
We hope you stop by, say hi, fall in love with his new work, and take home a piece to add to your personal collection.
COMMISSIONS:
Keep in mind, commission work is always an option. Joe's commission season runs mid-October thru February, so get in your requests at the show! Joe can work with a special book of yours, or if you have beloved subjects or themes that can always serve as a jumping off point, too.
