Our January meeting will be on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at the Winona Area Humane Society. We will gather at 5:45 PM and the tour will start at 6:00 PM.
What the Winona Area Humane Society does: Heal, shelter, and care for animals that have no where else to turn. Place homeless animals in new, loving homes. Reduce overpopulation of homeless animals by spay and neutering. Assist law enforcement with animal abuse and neglect cases. Teach children the importance of being kind to animals. Help injured, sick and orphaned wildlife. Provide spay and neutering to farm, feral and street cats. Teach responsible pet care. Assist city and county with lost and abandoned animals. Encourage people to enjoy the benefits of volunteering
The Winona Area Humane Society (WAHS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. As such, the WAHS relies 100% on donations, fees collected from adoptions and reclaims, and small fees paid to it by the City and County of Winona for animals taken in from them.
In addition, WAHS is a no-kill shelter, which means that WAHS only euthanizes in extreme health or behavior circumstances. WAHS does not euthanize an animal simply because space is needed or he/she has been at WAHS for too long.
Since WAHS is a non-profit and it relies so heavily on donations, it cannot afford a large staff. WAHS currently has one full-time employee (Joe Justman) who runs the day-to-day operations, the volunteer programs, and many other tasks to ensure WAHS fulfills its goals. Besides Joe, WAHS has six other part-time staff members whose jobs are directly related to the day-to-day care of our animals. A tremendous corps of volunteers (roughly 200) come in throughout the day to be sure WAHS's animals are cared for, are living in a clean environment, and receive socialization.
