St. John’s Episcopal Church is the oldest existing edifice in Charlestown, built in 1841. The woodland garden, located behind the church and parish house, was designed by Reverend Wolcott Cutler, the rector of the church from 1924 to 1959. Rev. Cutler began to realize his dream for a garden in 1937, when he created a serene and peaceful space for visitors and parishioners to enjoy.
  
The hurricanes of 1938, 1954 and 1985 destroyed some of the original plantings but the garden now flourishes with many new plants and trees provided and nurtured by a small, active group of parishioners. During the summer months, an 8:00 am service is held in the garden (weather permitting). The garden contains an altar built by a parishioner, benches and a baptismal font created from a millstone rescued from the Mystic River in 1938 by Reverend Cutler.
  
In 2008 the garden was the recipient of Mayor Menino’s first place award in the category entitled “School or House of Worship Garden”, a sure sign of the vitality of the garden and an affirmation of hard work and was invited by the Charlestown Garden group to be on their upcoming pocket garden tour being held on Saturday, June 20th. Our next goal is to landscape the side yard next to the parish house. We are in the planning stages and are being thankfully assisted by Hawk Design Inc., local landscape architects in Charlestown.
